Endoscopic Olecranon Bursectomy

Olecranon Bursitis is a condition where the fluid-filled bursa or sac around the olecranon (elbow region) is inflamed and swollen. This is often caused by overuse, trauma, or repetitive motion. Endoscopic Olecranon Bursectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is used to remove the bursa/sac when it becomes inflamed and painful. Compared to the traditional method of incising the skin over the bursa to remove it, this procedure avoids the need to make an incision directly over the skin that is subject to stretching when the patient bends and extends the elbow, potentially reducing wound breakdown complications and pain when the patient rests the elbow on a hard surface after the wound heals.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions in the skin above and below the swelling and insert an endoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light on the end, into the space to view the area. The surgeon will then use small instruments inserted through the other incisions to remove the inflamed bursa. After the procedure, the incisions are closed with simple sutures.

However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications associated with endoscopic bursectomy, including infection, bleeding, swelling and nerve injury. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of endoscopic bursectomy with your doctor to determine if it is the right treatment option for you as not all patients are suitable for this procedure.
