Rotator Cuff Repair
Rotator cuff repair is a surgical procedure used to treat a tear in one or more of the tendons that make up the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that attach the shoulder blade to the upper arm bone and help to stabilize and provide fine movement control to the shoulder joint.
During the procedure, the surgeon will first make a small incision in the shoulder and use a small camera (arthroscopy) to assess the shoulder joint. He will subsequently use specialized instruments to reattach the torn tendon(s) to the upper arm bone.
Depending on the size and location of the tear, the surgeon may use multiple sutures and anchors to hold the tendon in place. In some cases, the surgeon may need to remove damaged tissue or bone spurs before repairing the tendon.
Recovery time after rotator cuff repair varies depending on the extent of the surgery, but typically involves a period of simple immobilisation with an armsling followed by a rehabilitation program to restore strength and range of motion in the shoulder. This typically occurs over 6-12 weeks. Complications can occur with any surgery, and potential risks with rotator cuff repair can include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and failure of the surgery to fully resolve the pain.
It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of rotator cuff repair with your doctor to determine if it is the right treatment option for you. Factors such as the size and location of the tear, your age and overall health, and your level of physical activity and job demands may all play a role in the decision to undergo surgery.
