Regeneten (Biologic Device)

Complaining about pain in shoulder

Regeneten (Biologic Device)

The Regeneten is a biologic device implanted onto the rotator cuff. It is derived from highly purified bovine achilles tendon and improves the biologic environment around the injured tendon, improving its healing. Once implanted, over 3-6 months, the collagen scaffold encourages the growth of new tissue in the area, improving the biomechanical strength of the tendon or assisting in healing the tendon tear.

One of the benefits of the Regeneten device is that it can be used in patients where the rotator cuff tendon is not torn but diseased and weakened to an extent that its strength is not sufficient for the daily functional needs of the patient, resulting in pain. Another benefit would be that it can be used in some patients with partial thickness rotator cuff tears, replacing the traditional practice of completing the tear and repairing it. This minimises the duration of immobilisation required post-surgery, resulting in more convenience to the patient.

However, like any medical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with the use of the Regeneten device. These can include infection, bleeding, hypersensitivity reactions and failure of the device to integrate with the rotator cuff tendon. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the Regeneten device with your doctor to determine if it is the right treatment option for you.

Here at Total Orthopaedic Care & Surgery, Our Surgeon is proficient with the use of the Regeneten device, having performed multiple surgeries with it. A comprehensive discussion of the Regeneten device’s risks and benefits, including its social implications, is required prior to being offered the implantation of the Regeneten device. A dedicated 12 week rehabilitation program (minimum) is required post-surgery and most patients will be issued a tele-rehabilitation device to track their progress post-surgery for the duration of their recovery.

If you have shoulder pain and a suspected rotator cuff injury, and would like an assessment and discussion of your treatment options including Regeneten,  do make an appointment with our orthopaedic specialist at Total Orthopaedic Care & Surgery today.
