Reverse Shoulder Joint Replacement

Reverse Shoulder Joint Arthroplasty/Replacement (RSA)

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), is a surgical procedure used to treat severe shoulder arthritis and other conditions that have damaged the shoulder joint. In this procedure, the surgeon removes the damaged parts of the shoulder joint and replaces them with an artificial joint.

The Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty(RSA) procedure is called “reverse” because it reverses the normal anatomy of the shoulder joint for optimal function. In a normal shoulder, the ball of the upper arm bone fits into the shallow socket of the shoulder blade. In a reverse shoulder arthroplasty, the ball and socket are switched, with the ball portion of the joint now attached to the shoulder blade and the socket portion attached to the upper arm bone. This reversal of the joint can help improve the stability of the shoulder joint, decrease pain and restore a functional range of motion, even in cases where the rotator cuff muscles are severely torn or atrophied or in complex fractures of the upper aspect of the arm (proximal humerus).

As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications associated with reverse shoulder arthroplasty, including infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and implant failure. Recovery time and rehabilitation can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and individual factors, but typically involves a short period of simple immobilization with an armsling followed by a rehabilitation program to restore strength and range of motion in the shoulder. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of reverse shoulder arthroplasty in detail with your doctor before determining if it is the right treatment option for you.
