SCR / Tendon Transfer
The Superior Capsular Reconstruction (SCR) is a surgical procedure that is used to treat a large irreparable rotator cuff tear. In this procedure, the surgeon uses a graft made from a synthetic material or tissue from the patient (Autograft) or a donor (Allograft) to create a new layer of tissue that spans the gap between the shoulder blade (glenoid) and the upper arm bone (humerus). This new layer of tissue helps to stabilize the shoulder joint and restores function.
The Tendon transfer procedure (eg. Lower trapezius transfer, Pectoralis minor transfer etc.) is another surgical procedure that can be used to treat a massive irreparable rotator cuff tear. In this procedure, the surgeon utilises a tendon from another part of the body next to or near the shoulder joint and attaches it to the upper arm bone(humerus) to help replace the function of the rotator cuff in the shoulder joint. Occasionally, it is performed with the Superior Capsular Reconstruction (SCR) procedure.
Both SCR and Tendon transfer are complex surgical procedures that are typically used in cases where repair of a torn rotator cuff is not possible. These procedures are not routinely performed as they benefit only a small specific group of patients. Recovery time and potential benefits and risks can vary depending on various factors (eg. patient or surgery related). As these are complex procedures with intricate variations in its technique to suit your needs, it is important to discuss the potential benefits and risks of these procedures with your doctor to determine if they are the right treatment option for you.
