What Is A Clavicle (Collarbone) Fracture?
A clavicle fracture, also known as a broken collarbone, is a common injury that can occur from a fall, sports injury, or trauma. It is important to understand what it is and the different types of fractures that can occur.
Clavicle fractures are fairly common and can occur in patients of all ages. In adults, most tend to occur after a direct fall onto the shoulder or on an outstretched hand. Occasionally, it can be associated with higher energy injuries like bicycle or motor vehicle accidents.
The fracture configuration/patterns can vary – it can occur as a single break or break into multiple fragments. The fragments can be well aligned or be widely separated.
Anatomy of the Clavicle
The clavicle is a long bone that connects the shoulder to the breastbone and helps support the arm. Various muscles attach to it and it lies above several important structures, namely nerves and blood vessels, though these tend to not be injured in most cases.

Diagnosis and Treatment
If you suspect you have a clavicle fracture, you should seek immediate medical attention from an orthopaedic surgeon at Total Orthopaedic Care & Surgery. Our doctor will first ask you some questions about your injury, how it occurred and your current symptoms. He will then carefully examine your shoulder to rule out any associated nerve and vessel injuries near the collarbone.
Radiographs or X-rays of the collarbone are commonly performed to identify the location of the fracture and the severity of injury. Additional xrays may be performed if other injuries are suspected. Less commonly, a Computed tomography (CT) or MRI may also be required.
Treatment for Clavicle Fracture
Rehabilitation after treatment for a clavicle fracture typically involves physical therapy to restore strength, range of motion, and function in the shoulder joint. It is important to follow your orthopaedic specialist’s instructions for treatment and rehabilitation to ensure the best possible outcome for your clavicle fracture.
